Ethical Hackathons, building and reflecting together.
A one-day workshop combining hands-on technical problem-solving with structured ethical reflection. Pairs well with CDT induction or an end-of-cohort retreat, and works particularly well for cohorts with mixed technical and non-technical backgrounds.
How to take this course

The hackathon format puts cohorts into small teams working on a technical brief with a clear ethical and societal dimension. Teams build something concrete by the end of the day, and the ethical reflection is structured into the work, not bolted on at the end. We use prompts derived from the AREA framework to guide reflection through the build.
Particularly effective at CDT inductions, where new cohorts get to know each other through joint work; and at end-of-cohort retreats, where the format encourages reflection on what the cohort has learned about responsible practice across the doctoral programme.
Who the format suits.
CDT cohorts, particularly mixed-discipline cohorts that include both technical and non-technical members. Also useful for research groups wanting to build collaborative culture around ethical practice.
